DEFINITION (Wikipedia):
“the history behind the (…) main story. Often employed to lend the main story depth… a back-story may include the history of characters, objects, countries, or other elements of the main story. Back-stories are usually revealed, sketchily or in full, chronologically or otherwise, as the main narrative unfolds. However, a story creator may also create portions of a back-story or even an entire back-story that is solely for his or her own use in writing the main story and is never revealed in the main story.”
One such element that played a major part in the film and in telling the story ‘of Darkness’ was the ‘book of evil’ in the film. Many people do not know that the title of the book was actually ‘Of Darkness’. To be more exact, in the back-story it was actually entitled ‘The Book of Darkness’ (but I’ll elaborate on that a bit later). The amount of back-story that I put into developing where the darkness came from and why it exists, was fundamental to what the darkness was able to do… and more importantly, added to the birthing of the book itself – Written on pages of flesh – bound with human bone – covered in the skin of human sacrifice.
The impetus for what the Darkness was, was the first line of the Book of Genesis: “When God began to create heaven and earth, and the earth then was welter and waste and darkness over the deep and God’s breath hovering over the waters, God said, ‘Let there be light.’ and there was light”.
Before there was light – there was Darkness.
But just as the Judeo-Christian faith followed their book of Genesis… there too was a Book of Darkness. And it too had its followers.
I will discuss more of this back-story in future blogs.
